CHENNAI: Hundreds of residents of Pattabiram were forced to travel long distances for routine banking transactions on Wednesday as operations at the two bank branches in their locality were severely affected as a result of damage to underground cables of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd on the stretch of the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road.

The cables snapped during digging for an ongoing project to construct a road overbridge in the area. The residents complained that since Tuesday evening, hundreds of BSNL landlines and broadband connections did not function.

Simple banking transactions

For customers of Indian Bank and Syndicate Bank branches, the cable damage came in the way of their transacting simple banking transactions such withdrawing money from accounts and getting cheques cleared through core banking network.

Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said a sizeable number of residents were customers of these two branches.

The only other branch was that of a private sector bank, even which was at a distance from the locality.

Several senior citizens had to travel to far off areas to withdraw cash. Many people had to travel to other areas to use automated teller machines as the only facilities attached to the banks were not functioning function since Tuesday evening, he added.

Representatives of Indian Bank said that its branch in Pattabiram had nearly 25,000 customers.

On an average, 600 daily transactions pertaining to cash payment or withdrawal would be done in the bank.

“We could not carry out a single transaction due to the failure of core banking facility and had to divert customers to other branches,” an official said.

6,000 customers

Officials of Syndicate Bank said about 6,000 customers were asked to approach its branches in Ambattur or Anna Nagar for transactions.

About 200 customers would use the ATM facility attached to the bank daily during this time of the month.

“We complained to the authorities concerned about the problem. We had no choice but divert the customers to other branches owing to the delay in the restoration of the network,” an official of Syndicate Bank said.

An official of BSNL Chennai Telephones in Ambattur said, “We were not informed of the digging work.”

Steps are being taken for speedy restoration of the service in a day.
