The telecom regulator on Friday said that there were 11.44 million new telephone users in May slightly lower than 11.75 million new subscribers in April. This is the second month in a row when the growth rate has declined. Mobile operators added 11.59 million wireless subscribers in May compared with 11.90 million the previous month.
Industry sources said the slow down in growth is due to poor performance by BSNL which added under 5 lakh new subscribers when private players are getting more than a million new mobile users. The total telecom subscriber base stood at 452.91 million in May against 441.47 million in April. The overall tele-density has reached 38.88. The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA and WLL-F) base stood at 415.25 million. In the wireline segment, the subscriber base has decreased marginally by 0.15 million to 37.66 million. Total broadband subscriber base has reached 6.40 million in May, compared with 6.28 million in the previous month, TRAI said.
