Telecom operators opposes per-second billing system
Posted October 8th, 2009 by Sunil KashyapDoT Telecom Sector India Indian Telecom operators have shown their strong opposition to a decision by the TRAI chairman J S Sarma's in which he has impelled the operators to implement a tariff system that is based on pay per second scheme as against the existing pay per pulse scheme.
In the currently implemented pulse system, users have to pay for a complete pulse of one minute even if the call was terminated before the pulse.
Mr. Manoj Kohli, CEO & Jt MD of Bharti Airtel said that TRAI’s decision is not beneficial for the telecom market as well as for the users as it is the market competition that led to the advancements in the services by the operators.
He added that Airtel would not respond to the Reliance’s move in which it has reduced all national call and SMS rates to 50 paise. He also said that the company has its own strategies and it will continue to follow it.
Mr. Samaresh Parida, director (strategy), Vodafone Essar said that the users have so many options in the market that is just because of the free market forces. However, they would be glad to be a part of any consultative process, which is aimed for the long term and sustained user satisfaction.
TRAI need to have a good consultation before finalizing any decision as many big operators will stiffly oppose the ‘per second’ billing system.
