THANE CYCLONE – A report from CUDDALORE District, TN.
Cuddalore, in Tamil Nadu was affected heavily by the ‘Thane’ Cyclone in the early morning of 30-12-2011. New Year began with sorrow to the people of cuddalore District including Neyveli. Pondicherry was also affected in this cyclone.
The roof of the huts, houses thatched with tin sheets, asbestos have been snatched by the cyclone. Lakhs and lakhs, of people lost their houses and their belongings. They are staying the Community halls,marriage halls. All the trees have been uprooted by the ghost ‘thane’ in Cuddalore district. Very old trees like peepul, banyan, jackfruits, cashew, coconut, tamarind, ashoka, Teak and many more were uprooted. The falling tree damaged many houses and vehicles.Some of the charityinstitutions are giving relief materials for the basic needs of the marooned people. The whole Cuddalore district in dark for the past 5 days.There is no electricity. On 4th january only some of the areas have been provided with electricity. Because of this, people are not getting drinking water/ bore well water. The local Administration is taking action to restore electricity and water supply. The local administration is doing its level best to provide water and by tanker lorries.

Our BSNL staffs are also affected in the cyclone. The water tank in the Telecom quarters compound was demolished in the cyclone. Next day onwards our staff have involved in restoring the services. During
cyclone and aftermath only our BSNL mobile phones were working. Nearly 50% of the towers were affected in the cyclone. In most of the towers the antennae were tilted. Few were fallen. Within a day all the GSM services were set right. All other operators shut down their services in Cuddalore district during this period, but our services were only available. The media and the common people have appreciated our BSNL. The exchanges located in the affected are run by Engine Alternators. So far the expenditure towards the diesel crossed 30 Lakhs.
Eventhough our BSNL executives and staff are affected by the cyclone, they have turned up for duty and involved themselves in restoring the services of land lines, broadbands. They have involved in restoring the fallen posts, pillars and towers. Our executives worked day and night in the maintenance of the telephone exchanges. Common people have used the facility provided for recharging their mobiles in the customer service centres and telephone exchanges. Due to our continuous, unblemished service, the image of our BSNL increased.
